How to Get Media Exposure For Your Company – 3 Must Have Skills to Getting Media
From a previous appearsance on Business Rockstars, I covered some must have skills that you need to develop and use in order to get media exposure for your company.
Skills you need:
#1 Communication skills .
Arguably the most important skill, you must be regularly using email, phone, and, yes, even mail to communicate your story to the media
Your messaging must be concise, and in relevant bites, be sure to get to the point! Your email subject lines must be compelling enough to get the recipient to open the email. Lead the reader into your email with a series of bullet points, save the longer prose for the bottom, if the producer, editor or journalist you’re pitching is interested they’ll go further, but most importantly you must get them interested!
#2 Visualization and complete story creation.
View your company and your pitch through the media’s audience and pitch a complete story. Understand who you’re pitching by understanding the type of stories the media is doing.
#3 Discipline, persistence, don’t give up!
Don’t harass the media by calling them constantly, but don’t be shy about following up with a phone call. Also, look to social media (mostly Twitter) for clues as to what the journalist is covering. If one pitch doesn’t get the attention you’re trying to get, follow up in a few weeks with a new pitch or a follow up on your previous pitch that includes a twist!
